Lesson 29, Q3~Q5

SECOND DAY: Read Matthew 28:1-15.

Q3.

a. On what day did Jesus rise from the dead?

Matthew 28:1 After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week.

Luke 24:1 On the first day of the week, very early in the morning.

John 20:1 Early on the first day of the week.

b. Who went to the tomb first?

The women; ¹Mary Magdalene [Mt, Jn, Lk], ²the other Mary [Mt, Lk]=the mother of James, ³Joanna [Lk].

c. What happened before they arrived at the tomb?

There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it.

Q4.

a. Why were the women afraid? (See also Mark 16:5-8; Luke 24:4-8.)

Because first had a big earthquake and they saw the guards became like dead men. Then the angel appearances like lightning in a white robe.

b. What did they do when they met Jesus?

They were afraid when they hurried away from the tomb and ran to tell the disciples. Mary was crying.

c. What did Jesus tell them to do?

To tell the disciples to meet Jesus in Galilee.

d. How has Jesus’ presence helped you overcome your fear?

Jesus is the best intercessor for us. Jesus’ presence calms me down, comforts me and provides me the wisdom. He ever lives to make intercession for us.

Hebrews 7:25 Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them.

a. How did the following groups respond to the Resurrection? (Also see Luke 24:19-27.)

Jesus’ friends- fill with joy.

The guards- terrified.

The Jewish leaders- panic and tried to cover what happened they bribed the soldiers.

The Jewish people- foolish, and slow to believe all the prophets had spoken.

b. Read Mark 16:14; John 20:9. How would you answer someone who says the disciples invented 捏造 the facts of Jesus’ resurrection?

They were not capable of inventing the facts of Jesus’ resurrection because they did not understand from Scripture, and neither had faith to believe what Jesus’ told them.

Lesson 27, Q11~Q12

FIFTH DAY: Read Matthew 27:11-31; Luke 23:1-12.  

Q11.

a. What did Herod want, and what did Jesus say to him?

Herod saw Jesus, he was greatly pleased, because for a long time Herod had been wanting to see Jesus. From what he had heard about him, he hoped to see him perform a sign of some sort.

b. What do you remember about Herod that helps you understand the Lord’s response to him?

Herod had arrested John and kept him in prison because Herod liked John’s teaching. Later Heros had killed John because of Herodias. And then Herod worried about Jesus was John risen from the dead. So that is why miraculous powers are at work in Jesus. Herod fears people more than he fears God even he is aware of Jesus’ power.

c. In what way did Herod have more “spiritual light” than Pilate?

Herod was aware of miraculous powers from Jesus and John, but he chose to sin to follow his desire. However, Pilate knew Jesus was innocent Pilate still granted the wicked people’s wish to execute Jesus. Pilate said to Jesus “You are a king, then!” Actually Pilate did not care of the truth, nor any spiritual light in Pilate at all.

d. What warning does this give you?

We shall seize the opportunity if we can learn about Jesus or the will of God.

Q12.

a. Give evidence that Pilate realized Jesus’ innocence, from any of the Scripture references. (Also read John 18:28-19:16.)

[Matthew 27] Pilate knew it was out of self-interest that they had handed Jesus over to him. Also his wife sent him this message: “Don’t have anything to do with that innocent man, for I have suffered a great deal today in a dream because of him.” [John 18] Pilate went out to the Jews and said, “I find no basis for a charge against him. Pilate even tried to set Jesus free [John 19].

b. What was the real reason the religious leaders handed Jesus over to Pilate? Give verse.

Matthew 27:18, it was out of self-interest that they had handed Jesus over to him.

c. Read John 19:12-16. What was the real reason Pilate handed Jesus over to be crucified?

Pilate was afraid of losing his position because the Jewish leaders kept shouting, “If you let this man go, you are no friend of Caesar. Anyone who claims to be a king opposes Caesar.”

d. What lesson for your life do you learn from this?

Temptation is a great enemy because the spirit is willing, but the fresh is weak. Therefore, we need to understand the word of God deeper, and to pray more often, and depend on God but not on ourselves, so that we will be able to against it.

1 Corinthians 10:13

No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.

Lesson 27, Q8~Q10

FOURTH DAY: Read Matthew 26:69-27:10; Luke 22:54-62; John 18:12-27.

Q8

a. List steps that led to Peter’s denial. Use verses from this and previous lessons.

It started with the first sin: Peter lied about the relationship between he and Jesus.

And then the sin gets bigger: Peter denied it again, with an oath.

Finally the sin taking over the mind: Peter began to call down curses, and he swore to them.

Jesus turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him: “Before the rooster crows today, you will disown me three times.” 62 And he went outside and wept bitterly.

Jesus gave a convincing look straight at Peter: “Don’t you know me?” “Never disown me even if all fall away on account of me?” “Stop to be controlled by sins!”

b. Try to relate these steps to the steps by which you might fall into sin today.

I made sins often, so I must repent to God to stop the sin carry on or eventually to lose the control.

Q9

a. How did Peter and Judas differ in their sins and their later attitudes and actions?

They all regretted and felt guilty. Judas admitted his sins for he betrayed innocent blood and returned the money.” Then he went away and hanged himself. He tried to end his mistake by a self-righteous way. Peter went outside and wept bitterly. It’s a truly repent.

b. (Challenge) How did Peter ultimately show he had true faith?

To build true faith we must live the life with faith. (James 2:14-26; Faith without works is dead)

After denied Jesus for three times Peter was in need of forgiveness from Jesus. He bravely went back to the disciple team. On Easter morning Peter ran to the tomb because he was eager to see Jesus be risen from the death (John 20:3-6). Later Peter jumped into the water when he heard people said Jesus stood on the shore (John 21:4-7). Ultimately Peter was restored and had true faith since the changes of his behavior that the way when Jesus repeatedly asked “Do you love me?”

John 21:15 When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?” “Yes, Lord,” he said, “you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Feed my lambs.”

16 Again Jesus said, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” He answered, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Take care of my sheep.”

17 The third time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, “Do you love me?” He said, “Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Feed my sheep.

Finally shown in Acts 1 that Peter stood up among the believers and gave a speech with the inspiration from the Holy Spirit showed Peter ultimately had true faith

c. What is the difference between repentance and simply being sorry for sin as Judas was?

Repentance: ask for redemption from God; being sorry for sin: no ask for redemption from God.

d. (Challenge) Why was Judas responsible for his sin?

Believers have the freedom to do anything lawful, but if we are overtaken by the temptation we must take responsible for ourselves because no temptation is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.

The Believer’s Freedom

“I have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything”—but not everything is constructive.

1 Corinthians 10:13

Q10. Contrast the questioning that Jesus and Peter endured at about the same time.

Publicly questioned to Jesus with threat:

“Tell us if you are the Messiah, the Son of God.” (Matthew)

The high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and his teaching. (Luke)

Privately questioned to Peter yet with threat (since John was inside as well):

 “You aren’t one of this man’s disciples too, are you?” a servant girl asked Peter. “This man was with him.”

“You aren’t one of his disciples too, are you?” “You also are one of them.”

“Didn’t I see you with him in the garden?” Malchus asked Peter. “Certainly this fellow was with him, for he is a Galilean.” (Luke)

Lesson 27, Q5~Q7

THIRD DAY: Read Matthew 26:57-68; 27:1-2; John 18:12-14, 19-24.

Q5.

a. What Jewish leader separately examined Jesus prior to His trial before Caiaphas?

Jesus was brought to Annas first.

b. How was this leader related to Caiaphas?

Annas was the father-in-law of Caiaphas.

Annas officially served as High Priest for ten years (6–15 AD), when at the age of 36 he was deposed by the procurator Gratus. Yet while having been officially removed from office, he remained as one of the nation's most influential political and social individuals, aided greatly by the use of his five sons and his son-in-law as puppet High Priests.

Q 6.

a. Give the three main phases of Jesus’ trial before Caiaphas, giving verses from Matthew’s Gospel.

1-They first looked for false evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death (26:57)

2-They twisted what Jesus’ word that “I am able to destroy the temple of God and rebuild it in three days.” to force him to admit his rebellion that he tried to destroy the temple of God. (26:61)

3-They won’t accept the answer that Jesus admitted He is the Son of God. They went upset and said “Why do we need any more witnesses”. “He is worthy of death”. (26:63-66)

b. What did the chief priests and elders do early in the morning?

Early in the morning, all the chief priests and the elders of the people made their plans how to have Jesus executed. 2 So they bound him, led him away and handed him over to Pilate the governor.

Q 7. Read Daniel 7:13-14.

a. How did Jesus refer to Daniel when He replied to Caiaphas?

Jesus referred to Daniel and replied. “But I say to all of you: From now on you will see the Son of Man He was given authority, glory and sovereign power sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and will be coming on the clouds of heaven.”

b. What is the tremendous importance of Jesus’ reply (Matthew 26:63-66)?

Jesus remained silent for a while and then Jesus gave them a reason to kill him to fulfill God’s plan, so he said “From now on you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.”

c. Why were Jesus’ words not blasphemous?

Because Jesus said the truth ‘He is the Messiah, the Son of God.”

Lesson 27, Q3~Q4

SECOND DAY: Read Matthew 26:47-56; John 18:1-11.

Q3.

a. Which disciple could have brought harm to all of the disciples by his hasty action?

John 18:10 Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant, cutting off his right ear.

b. What might have been the result if Jesus had not intervened?

It would become a violent rebellion that Jewish revolted against Roman, but not a fulfillment of God’s salvation. Then the soldiers would have an excuse to kill all disciples and followers and there won’t be shepherd to share the gospel and to make church in future. “I have not lost one of those you gave me.”

c. How did this disciple’s act show he was out of tune with God and Jesus?

If anyone really understood God’s will he would be obedient and fulfill God’s will just like what Jesus did. Peter tried to protect Jesus because he did not understand Jesus’ death was God’s plan.

d. When have you asserted your will because you did not have God’s mind about a situation? What did you learn that might help others avoid this mistake? Not sure it even happened.

Q4. Read Mark 14:43-50 and Luke 22:47-53. List points from any of the four Gospels that reveal:

a. Jesus’ humiliation

Jesus was captured by the crowd armed with swords and clubs at the same time all his people deserted him and flet.

b. Jesus’ majesty

Jesus said to the crowd

 “Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? Every day I was with you, teaching in the temple courts, and you did not arrest me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled.” Mark 14:48-49

c. Jesus’ care for His own at His arrest

Jesus did not try to escape and asked the crowd to let these men go.

Jesus stopped the violent and healed the high priest’s servant’s (Malchus) ear.

d. Jesus’ fulfillment of God’s purpose according to prophecy

9 This happened so that the words he had spoken would be fulfilled: “I have not lost one of those you gave me.”

"This is the will of Him who sent Me, that of all that He has given Me I lose nothing, but raise it up on the last day. John 6 :39

I will place shepherds over them who will tend them, and they will no longer be afraid or terrified, nor will any be missing," declares the LORD. Jeremiah 23:4

Lesson 26, Q11~Q12

FIFTH DAY: Read Matthew 26:36-46; Mark 14:32-42; Luke 22:39-46.

Q11. Consider Jesus’ sorrowful attitude about the “cup” He was to drink.

a. List several things that Jesus gave up or suffered when He went to the Cross.

He gave up his life, his mother and all other family member, his friends and the disciples. He suffered for the sins that he never committed.

b. Describe Jesus’ response when His closest friends fell asleep.

Jesus said “Couldn’t you men keep watch with me for one hour?” in Matthew.

Jesus said “Simon,” “are you asleep? Couldn’t you keep watch for one hour? Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.” in Mark.

When he rose from prayer and went back to the disciples, he found them asleep, exhausted from sorrow. 46 “Why are you sleeping?” he asked them. “Get up and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.” in Luke.

I think Jesus was hurt and disappointed.

c. How does Jesus’ attitude help you understand His full humanity?

Jesus was deeply distressed and troubled and asked his friends to go along with him to a quite place to pray together with him.

Q12. List facts from the Mark and Luke passages that Matthew does not include.

Simon was asleep.

Jesus said, "everything is possible for you..."

Jesus withdrew about a stone’s throw beyond the disciples to pray.

An angel from heaven appeared to Jesus and strengthened him.

And being in anguish, Jesus prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.

The disciples fell asleep because they were exhausted from sorrow.

Lesson 26, Q8~Q10

FOURTH DAY: Read Matthew 26:31-35; Mark 14:27-31; Luke 22:31-38.

Q8. Give ways the Lord’s conversation with Peter showed that Peter:

a. Was weak at his strongest point

Peter was quite confident about himself, but Jesus wanted Peter to be strong in God’s way. Therefore, Peter’s proud attitude was his greatest weakness.

b. Thought he was better than the others

Peter declared, “Even if all fall away on account of you, I never will.”

c. Entered Gethsemane in a dangerous attitude of mind.

Peter said “Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and to death.” Even Jesus predicts Peter’s denial, Peter insisted emphatically, “Even if I have to die with you, I will never disown you.” Be the greatest among all disciples was in Peter’s mind when he entered Gethsemane. It represented over-confident, arrogant, and self-center and such a dangerous attitude must led to fail.

Q9. a. From Jesus’ prayer for Peter, what encourages you about:

God’s sovereignty over Satan?

Jesus told Peter about Satan asked to sift Peter as wheat, but Jesus already prayed for Peter. Since God’s sovereignty is over Satan, so Peter would turn back, hence Jesus asked Peter to strengthen his brothers. Since God’s sovereignty is always over Satan, whenever we pray Jesus will strength our hearts and defeat Satan.

The tempted Christian?

Jesus’ prayer for Peter’s faith won’t fail even Peter was tempted, but he would turn back. Jesus’ prayer let the tempted Christians regain faith and turn back to God.

Jesus knows the weakness of Peter and also has the confidence in Peter.

Jesus knows the weakness of me and also has the confidence in me.  

b. Can you share with your group how God gave you new strength and power to help others after a time when you failed Him?

God brought me back from suffering from depression and gave me new strength and power.

Q10. What did Jesus tell the disciples about:

a. What each of them would do that night?

The flock will be scattered.

b. His resurrection and the place of the next meeting?

But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.
