Q9
(Challenge) a. Why did Jesus take His
disciples outside the boundaries of Israel at this time?
Jesus went to Gentile region to avoid the crowds of Jews so
he could be close to God and fought to the temptations, which were for devil for they never stop.
1-John 6 15, the people attempted to "make him king by force,"
causing him to withdrew by himself.
2-Luke
4 13 When the devil had finished all this tempting,
he left him until an opportune time.
3-Mark 7 24 Jesus left that place and went to the
vicinity of Tyre. He entered a house and did not
want anyone to know it
b. What did the Canaanite woman call Jesus, and what do you know
about the Canaanites that makes her words especially significant?
A Canaanite woman called him “Lord,
Son of David”. This particular woman came from
the area near Tyre and Sidon, north of Galilee. These were notoriously ungodly
cities. But she recognized Jesus the Lord.
Q10
a. (Challenge) Why did Jesus initially answer this woman as He did?
Jesus has
no answer to the woman initially. And then he said “I was sent only to the lost
sheep of Israel” because from what he learned from the Scripture that his
ministry was for Israel only.
Isaiah 53:6
6 We all, like sheep, have gone astray,
each of us has turned to our own way; and
the Lord has laid on him the
iniquity of us all.
Jeremiah 50:6
My people have been lost sheep; their
shepherds have led them astray and caused them to roam on the mountains.
They wandered over mountain and hill and forgot their own resting place.
Jeremiah 50:17
17 “Israel is a scattered flock that lions have chased away. The first to devour them was the king of Assyria; the last to crush their bones was Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon.”
Matthew 10
5 These twelve Jesus sent out with the following
instructions: “Do not go among the Gentiles or enter any town of the
Samaritans. 6 Go rather to the lost sheep of Israel.
b. How does her reply show developing understanding of Jesus and
confidence in His compassion?
Because her daughter was suffering
terribly from the demon-possession she humiliated herself as a dog in a
desperate effort to save her daughter, refusing to give up even when Jesus
rebuffed her. She knew Jesus had compassion for people, so she crying out to Jesus “have mercy on me!’
c. Read Mark 7:24-30. What additional insights does this passage
give you?
1-Jesus says, “First let the children eat all they want,”
meant that after Jews the Gentile would also have the opportunity to
hear the gospel.
2-The woman was a Greek, born in Syrian Phoenicia.
