Peter
was also known as "Cephas" from a Syriac surname given by Christ
meaning "rock." The Greeks translated it as Petros, and the Latins
translated it as Petrus.
"You are Kepha and on this very kepha I
will build my Church."
Jesus promised to build the Church on Peter, and said “I
will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven.”
Q7 If “gates of Hades” means “gates
of death,” what do you think Matthew 16:18 means?
18 And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.

a. How did these events in the early church fulfill Jesus’ promise
to give Peter the keys to open the kingdom of heaven?
From Act 2, God poured out the Spirit on the disciples
to speak in tongue, to prophesy, to see vision, to dream dreams and on Peter that
he addresses the crowd and that day about three thousand fellow Jews accepted his message were baptized.
From Acts 10:24-43, at the place of Cornelius (the Roman centurion) Peter found Cornelius’ relatives and
close friends (a large gathering of people) there and 34 Then
Peter began to speak: “I now realize how true it is that God does not show
favoritism 35 but
accepts from every nation the one who fears him and does what is right. So the
message God not only sent to the people of Israel, also to Gentile.
By using the key Peter opened the kingdom of heaven to Jews
and to the Gentiles.
