Lesson 16, Q4~Q5

Q4, Read Exodus 20:12; Mark 7:11-13; Ephesians 6:1-3. “Corban” was money dedicated to God as a gift and not necessarily given until a later date.
Exodus 20:12 “Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.
Mark 7:11-13 11 But you say that if anyone declares that what might have been used to help their father or mother is Corban (that is, devoted to God) 12 then you no longer let them do anything for their father or mother. 13 Thus you nullify the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And you do many things like that.”
Ephesians 6:1-3 1Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 “Honor your father and mother” which is the first commandment with a promise  “so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.”
a. How did this use of “Corban” as a way to avoid supporting aged parents contradict God’s law?
Pharisees & teachers say “Mark 7:11- if anyone declares that what might have been used to help their father or mother is Corban” same to Matthew 15:5What you would have gained from me is given to God,” [ESV] Therefore they don’t need to provide money to parents but claim will give money to God, but yet, for the Corban can be given until a later date if there is any left then.
b. What principle from these passages could you apply to your present circumstances?
Be aware of sometime our partial obedience for God’s commands makes us hypocrites that Jesus hates the most.
Q5
a. Use Matthew 15:8-9 to explain how people can be religious yet not truly worship God.
Pharisees honor God not with their hearts but with lips only; worship God in vain; their teaching are taught by men and just rules.
